Joint JD/MBA Programs

As people choose their career, they have many options. They can go into the arts. They can go into education. Some choose law, and others choose business. Some people may want a career that is an intersection of business and law. As a result, they may consider applying to a joint JD/MBA program.

Law degrees (JD—Doctor of Jurisprudence) and business degrees (MBA—Master of Business Administration) are graduate, professional degrees that people get after getting their undergraduate degrees and that help provide training for a profession.

There are a number of benefits of joint JD/MBA programs. Obviously, they offer training in both law and business. As a result, people who go into business can use their law degree to provide them with a different perspective; or, if people go into law they can use their MBA to give them a business perspective on conducting law. Moreover, someone with both degrees has more career options. If the business world does not work out, law is an option, or vice versa.

Although joint JD/MBA programs have advantages, they do take a longer amount of time and more work than getting only an MBA or only a JD. Joint programs last four years, although some last three years. Students have to take more classes and they have a heavier workload, as they balance both business and law.

Many big name universities have joint JD/MBA programs. Harvard, Georgetown, and the University of Pennsylvania are some of those universities. Other, less well-known universities have joint programs as well, so students have many options about where to pursue a joint program.
