If you are invested in the stock market, you have probably noticed the rapid ups and downs that the stock exchange can undergo. Some people, called day traders, essentially bet their money on the idea that the price of a stock can rise rapidly for several minutes, and then fall back down again.

The reason why this type of investing is called day trading is because people who participate in it must pay close attention to the fluctuations of the stock market throughout the day. Day traders may purchase stock and only own it for several minutes. They can turn around and sell the shares as soon as they feel like the price might go back down. Day traders typically look for liquidity and volatility in stock prices.

If you've heard that investing in the stock market is the riskiest type of investment, day trading is the even more unpredictable subset of this investment. It can be tempting because you can make high profits. On the other hand, you can also lose a lot of money. Therefore, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission does not encourage this practice.

On the New York Stock Exchange, pattern day traders must have at least $25,000 in their account. However, if you have less than this amount, you can practice amateur day trading in the regular stock exchange. Keep in mind, though, that if you are trading through an external investment service, you may be charged for each trade you make. If you are truly day trading, this can become quite expensive.
